So you want to be a Rollergirl? Print

Of course you do! Being a Rage City Rollergirl rocks! But it rocks pretty hard and that means it can sometimes be tough, but it will always be rewarding.

We are an all-volunteer, skater-managed, non-profit organization dedicated to developing, promoting and sustaining the competitive sport of women’s roller derby in Alaska. We have two teams – Orange Crush, which plays against other teams around the state of Alaska, and the Rage City All*Stars which play against other nationally and internationally ranked teams. In previous seasons our All*Stars travelled all the way to Japan and more recently to Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado.

  • Roller derby requires monetary investment – Gear, dues, insurance
  • Time Commitment – Skaters practice 2 hours a day 2-4 days a week. Also, members are involved in committees and volunteer time during games and other League events
  • Roller derby is mentally challenging – You need to learn the rules of the game and ask questions
  • Roller derby is physically challenging – Rollergirls are athletes!

  • Gear – See Get Your Gear! below for the minimum requirements
  • Help – We’re a team, that’s what we’re here for!
  • Good sportswomanship and motivation!
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • The legal stuff: You can find all the required paperwork here! Print and bring with you to you to your first skate session.

  • 66% attendance is required to be on a roster for game day
  • 2+ days a week at AT&T Sports Pavilion
  • Weekend long training a few times a year
  • Our regular season runs from September through May but we are active in the League and on skates year-round

  • 4-5 home games a season, on Saturdays
  • Every member participates in the production of a home game
  • Opportunities to travel for tournaments and away games with other Leagues

Service and PR events

  • Membership requires participation in one event for both committees each season
  • Service events include – Highway Cleanup and Polar Plunge
  • PR events include – Saturday Market, Fur Rondy events and Pridefest Parade

Derby Social Life

  • Skater Retreats
  • Holiday Parties
  • Roller Con!

If you're still not sure, come watch a practice...

Get Your Gear! Print

Gear Up! Our insurance requires a minimum of skate helmet, mouth guard, elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads, and quad speed skates. Any veteran rollergirl on our league will be glad to give you advice on where to start. Toe stops must be a light color and all knee and elbow pads must be covered with teflon tape to prevent marking indoor track surfaces. (Ask for this at your local skate shop.)

You may buy derby gear and get gear advice locally in Alaska from rollergirl-owned 2N1 Skate Shoppe!

You can also check Sin City Skates; if you (use code RAGE60), Derbyville, Fast Girl Skates, Roller Girl Skates, Connie's Skate Place, Via Derby Skates, Skate Mall, or (for used gear) DerBuy.
